Watershed Development
WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT is essential for sustainable land, soil and water management, ensuring environmental conservation and livelihood improvement, agricultural growth, and socio-economic development, making it a vital strategy for holistic Rural Development.

Role in Soil & Water Management :
- Prevents soil erosion and improves in-situ soil moisture conservation through Farm bunds, Trenches, Bunds, Continuous Contour Trenches (CCT), Staggered Trenches, etc.
- Promotes rainwater harvesting and efficient water use through Farm ponds, Nala bunds, Checkdams, community ponds etc.
- Enhances groundwater recharge through Percolation pits, Recharge shafts, Recharge wells, etc.
- Boosts agricultural productivity by maintaining soil health and water availability during critical crop growth stages.
- Minimizes drought impacts by improving water availability during dry periods.

Role in Sustainable Agriculture & Ecological Adaptation :
- Encourages agro-forestry, horticulture plantations and diversified cropping for better yield on sustainable basis.
- Supports water efficient farming practices.
- Promotes sustainable resource use for long-term climatic resilience.
- Helps communities adapt to climate change and extreme weather conditions
- Protects and promotes Biodiversity.

Role in Livelihood Improvement :
- Enhances rural economies through better and quality agricultural outputs.
- Provides alternate employment opportunities and also reduces forced migration.

Role in Community Participation & Empowerment :
- Encourages participation of local communities and panchayats in decision making process for natural resources management.
- Strengthens self-governance, women empowerment and self-sufficiency in rural areas.
Role of Watershed Development
Creation of Structures like Check Dams, Percolation Tanks, Farm Ponds for storing rainwater, reduce soil erosion and surface runoff, ensuring water availability during dry periods.
Role of Watershed Development
Increasing Irrigation Potential & Groundwater Level to ensure water supply for crops, especially in regions where rainfall is unpredictable.
Role of Watershed Development
Soil Moisture Enhancement through Trenching, Contour by increase water infiltration into the soil.
Role of Watershed Development
Agroforestry and Horticulture Plantation which not only enhances soil health, improves biodiversity, helps in carbon sequestration, and creates sustainable livelihoods.

A Yatra Towards Conserving Soil and Water
Water and soil are the lifelines of agriculture, and their preservation is our responsibility. Watershed Yatra is a movement dedicated to addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time – ensuring fertile soil and abundant water for sustainable farming.
Rooted in the belief that “Saving water is saving soil and saving soil is saving life” the Yatra focuses on reviving watershed ecosystem promoting innovative soil and water management practices and fostering awareness in farming communities.
